Is online counselling actually effective?

Online counselling has become increasingly common in Australia, particularly over the past few years. Yet many people still wonder whether talking to a counsellor online can really be as effective as seeing someone in person — or whether something important is lost through a screen.

If you're considering online counselling, it's normal to feel unsure. Questions about effectiveness and connection with the counsellor are common, especially if you've never accessed counselling before.

The short answer is: yes, online counselling can be effective for many people. But, like all forms of counselling, how effective it feels depends on a few important factors.

Why online counselling works for many people

Online counselling isn't simply a second-best alternative to in-person sessions. For some people, it actually works better and here's why:

Accessibility and flexibility

Online counselling removes barriers such as travel time, location, mobility issues, and figuring out how to fit it in between work meetings or school pick up. This makes it easier to attend sessions consistently, which plays a big role in effectiveness.

Feeling more at ease

Many people feel more comfortable talking from their own home or a familiar space. This can make it easier to open up, especially when discussing sensitive or emotional topics. Without having to worry or pay for parking or get through traffic, it can make the session less stressful (a bonus if you're currently dealing with a lot of stressors).

Consistency during life stress

During periods of stress, transition, illness, or emotional overwhelm, online counselling can feel more manageable than adding extra appointments or travel to an already full schedule.

Choice of counsellor

Online counselling means you can find a counsellor that resonates with you. Research shows the relationship you have with your counsellor is one of the most important factors to your counselling outcomes, so it's important you find the right fit. Online counselling means you can find a counsellor anywhere in Australia who suits you and your needs and you're not limited to the counsellors in your suburb.

What matters more than the format

Whether counselling is effective depends less on whether it's online or in person, and more on:

  • Feeling safe and understood by your counsellor

  • A sense of trust and connection

  • Sessions are happening when you need them

  • Working at a pace that feels right for you

If these elements are present, online counselling can be just as meaningful and supportive as face-to-face sessions.

Is online counselling right for everyone?
